The beauty in the forgotten

  • Estelle’s collages are a conversation between past and present
  • She uses vintage materials and natural items that she has collected over years
  • Her work invites viewers to pause and reflect

Estelle Lichtenberger-Froehling’s studio in Luxembourg is a treasure trove of vintage postcards, weathered book pages, and antique photographs—many of which she finds at flea markets, second-hand book fairs, or through personal collections. These materials are the heart of her work, forming the basis for her collages and assemblages. Each piece she creates is a narrative, a journey through time and memory, where seemingly insignificant fragments come together to form multi-dimensional stories. For Estelle, these materials are more than just raw material—they carry the history and essence of their past. In working with them, she finds creative freedom and a sense of inner calm. Her process, characterised by spontaneity and meticulous attention to detail, gives her art a unique depth and intimacy. Estelle’s work invites viewers to slow down and uncover beauty in the forgotten.

Do you take on commissioned work?
Yes, and I truly enjoy creating commissioned pieces. It is a unique opportunity to weave someone's personal memories, heirlooms and stories into a meaningful work of art, making it a deeply personal and special creation.
How has your art evolved over time?
Over the years, my art has become more focused and intentional. While I started with a rather experimental approach, I now emphasize creating pieces that are emotionally resonant and connected to deeper personal stories.
What do you want people to feel when they experience your work?
I hope my artworks evoke a sense of nostalgia and discovery, like unearthing a forgotten memory. I want viewers to pause, reflect, and find beauty in the overlooked or the small, everyday moments that often pass unnoticed.
What is next for you as an artist?
I am looking forward to branching out into workshops, where I can share my passion for collage and vintage materials with others. I also hope to collaborate with different artists to infuse new perspectives into my work and broaden my creative horizons.
