In 1999, inspired by local artisans and the rich traditions of handwork, Maryam and Daren Bonar founded En Shalla. It is a workshop that marries Moroccan craftsmanship with London flair. Their journey started with a single, daring idea: to reimagine the humble baboosh using luxury materials. That slipper opened doors to collaborations with Paul Smith, Giorgio Armani, and other luxury designers. Today, the works of En Shalla are present in fashion shows in London, Paris, New York and Los Angeles, bringing visibility to colourful pieces handcrafted from recycled and locally sourced fabrics, as well as chrome-free leather.
The magic behind the objects happens in the villages around Marrakech, where women like Zohra hand-embroider, weave with recycled fabrics, and dye with plant-based leather treatments. En shalla employs local women who use ancestral embroidery and weaving techniques. Seeing pieces made by these artisans from the Atlas Mountains showcased on the fashion catwalks is a proud symbol of Maryam and Daren Bonar's original mission.
