Statements of personal meaning

  • David enjoys transforming metals into their pure state
  • He prefers to work with special, tailor-made tools to make unique designs
  • His first collection was exhibited at SIERAAD International Jewellery Art Fair in Amsterdam in 2019

A childhood pastime with paper jewellery is David Miralles’ earliest connection to his craft, and perhaps the seed of a lifelong exploration that evolved across the different stages of his life. He studied jewellery at Barcelona’s School of Arts in 1985 and worked in a traditional atelier before pursuing a 25-year career in marketing for an interior design firm. In 2015, David moved to Murcia and resumed his studies at the School of Arts, specialising in silver and gold rings, pendants, necklaces and cufflinks, designed with a renewed perspective shaped by his experience in interiors. “My pieces are generally influenced by Italian architecture and product design. I am always in search of further developing my signature style," he says. As a contemporary jeweller, David creates minimalist and modern pieces rooted in craftsmanship and custom-made tools.

What distinguishes your designs today?
My style is shaped by design with a purpose – minimalist and geometric forms with personal symbolism. My collection, It’s not a Rorschach Test, plays with this by leaving meaning to the wearer. Jewellery, such as an amulet, becomes a statement and source of confidence.
How do you approach your clients as a jeweller?
Handcrafted jewellery is not about wealth, it is about valuing quality over trends. Mass-produced pieces flood the European market, and they often contain cadmium and lead. I help clients see the value of handmade work and gently guide them towards pieces that truly suit them, without pressure.
What do you find of particular value in formal training in jewellery?
It is a marvellous, hands-on experience, with a human, direct and continuous exchange with the teacher, where you are always receiving feedback. It is also a place for exchange with students of all ages and all walks of life.
What are your plans for the future?
I would like to showcase my work in new European venues, such as Munich’s Schmuck, while continuing to sell my work online. I have bought a house in Novelda and plan to set up a new atelier where I can teach others.
