Enamel beyond decoration
- David is a master artisan specialising in Georgian cloisonné enamel artworks
- His practice is defined by precision in gesture and discipline in approach
- He applies his creative vision to decorate many different types of objects
David Kakabadze did not arrive at cloisonné enamel by inheritance alone. Trained as a sculptor, he moved towards ecclesiastical art in the late 1990s, following a line that was at once personal and exacting. His work carries the weight of Georgian ornament, but it is not nostalgic. He regularly works on commissions for jewellery pieces and monastic objects at varying scales, and in 2026 began a collaboration on Italian timepieces, all of which demand the same, high-level discipline. "In my works, I approach the shaping enamel as if it were form rather than just a surface," he says. David also creates framed painterly scenes of Tbilisi with enamel, expressing the beauty of the medium and of his city.

INTERVIEW
This happened for me when enamelling moved beyond simply applying technique. Instead, I began to work with it as a way to organise form, proportion and meaning. It allowed me to bring different elements into a single, controlled structure.
Its precision and structure. Georgian enamel work is rooted in centuries of ecclesiastical and ornamental systems, where each element has a defined place and function within the whole.
The context changes, but the process does not. Each work requires the same discipline, attention to material, and clarity of form, regardless of where it will exist.
The integrity of the process is key. Tools and methods can evolve, but the relationship between hand, material and intention must remain consistent for the craft to endure.
