Reading the world through drawing

  • Dale creates mixed technique illustrative works and prints her own magazines
  • She studied art education after completing her MA in Illustration
  • She balances commissioned work with independent projects

Dale Forbes Molina is an illustrator, graphic designer and educator specialising in storytelling and comics. Her practice centres on drawing, narrative and print, combining digital and analogue techniques. "I like to explore themes of longing, friendship, identity and the complexities of human connection using visual metaphors and recurring symbols," she says. Dale often reimagines familiar ideas with subtle shifts: a black swan among white swans suggests both belonging and standing apart, or an umbrella becoming the source of rain. Dale works with simple tools: ink and pen, gouache, pencils, coloured paper, glue and scissors. "A highlight was participating in the Pictobello Festival in 2024 where 20 artists created large-scale murals in eight hours!" she shares.

Dale Forbes Molina is an expert artisan: she began her career in 2016 and she started teaching in 2023.

INTERVIEW

My style evolved naturally through experimentation. While I began with figurative line drawings, my recent work has become more abstract, using colour, shape and composition to tell stories that are open-ended and invite personal interpretation.

Yes, absolutely. The Swiss illustration scene, and especially its graphic clarity and events like Fumetto, has influenced my work, while reconnecting with my Spanish roots has brought new energy, colour and spontaneity to my practice.

I have been fortunate to work on many enjoyable commissions. The most challenging projects are usually those outside my interests or visual language. Over time, I have learnt that knowing when to say no is just as important as accepting the right commission.

Being fully immersed in a project. Developing a visual narrative, and seeing the finished work out in the world. And, of course, receiving kind feedback from fellow illustrators.
