Clay, transformation and the passage of time

Ceramicist Burçak Bingöl deconstructs familiar representations and reconfigures them in innovative ways. She earned a PhD in fine arts at Hacettepe University, having studied music at Ankara State Conservatory and photography at New School in New York before committing to clay. To create her pieces, Burçak focuses on tracing, copying and reforming as she reworks objects, images and forms to open and explore visual ideas in clay, often in dialogue with Ottoman heritage. She has had solo exhibitions in New York, Ankara, Istanbul, Berlin, and Tate St Ives. Burçak’s work is held in major public and private collections worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Istanbul Modern, OMM, MOCAK, and Baksı Museum. She lives and works in Istanbul.

Exhibited at Homo Faber 2026, Neither Fix Space Nor Bind Time explores traditional ceramic forms as cultural objects. In the central, traditionally-shaped form, held inside a black metal frame, the surface is adorned solely with images of roses and appears to be melting. The glazed ceramic vessel is accompanied by independent fragments, small, dream-like pieces that orbit the main form, resting on the black support. The work evokes the fluid moment in which time and place momentarily solidify, and explores the tradition of ceramics as a cultural symbol forever in flux.
