The faces of a layered narrative

  • Batool creates textile and mixed media collages and concertina artist’s books
  • Her works reflect memory, loss, displacement and women’s lived experiences
  • She combines stitching with script and illustration, as well as acrylic painting

Batool Showghi leads a multidisciplinary practice centred on the concertina form, which resembles the accordion fold, to give her work great emotional resonance. Born in Iran, she often weaves her memories from her native country into her craft. Batool started drawing and painting at 16 and pursued her passion for photography, printmaking and the creation of concertina artist’s books during her university studies. "My practice gives me a sense of fulfilment and satisfaction," she says. Her creative process involves layering diverse fragments from photography, illustration, painting and textiles. Batool’s sewn pieces are narrative-based, integrating family birth certificates, passports, old photographs and documents.

Batool Showghi is a master artisan: she began her career in 1990 and she started teaching in 2001.

INTERVIEW

I received a merit for my MA in design and media arts from the University of Westminster in 1997, just after finishing my BA (Hons) at London Guildhall University. In 2001, I additionally received a Certificate of Education from the University of Westminster.

My work and writings in Farsi are a poetic reflection on my memories, the environment I grew up in, my family, and a city that was lost during the war. The concertina artist's books explore the emotional and physical upheaval of displacement.

My work explores the lived experiences of women as they navigate cultural and religious boundaries. It interrogates themes of turbulence, immigration, familial disintegration and displacement.

I combine traditional and digital media to create my artworks. While adopting the classic concertina artist's book format, I integrate innovative textile elements and stitching to shape my narratives.
