Weaving

San Jacinto, Colombia

Recommended by Artesanías de Colombia

Cultural traditions of Bolívar

Celmira Buelvas discovered the crafts world at the age of 9 when she started to teach herself how to weave. This craft became a way of life and of economic livelihood for her, to sustain her family. Celmira founded the workshop Artesanías Karen Dayana in 2007. It brings together more than 25 mothers and young people who make a range of artisanal products. Using new weaving techniques, they preserve and modernise the customs and cultural roots of the municipality of San Jacinto, in the region of Bolívar.

The approach at Artesanías Karen Dayana also has the purpose of strengthening the innovation of artisans, giving them the possibility to participate, and share knowledge and experiences that contribute to the development of ventures locally. Celmira is an inspiring craftswoman who leads the workshop with joyfulness, perseverance, passion and tradition. In 2022 she won the Craftsmanship Mastery Medal, awarded by Artesanías de Colombia.
