Textile renditions of Mediterranean folklore

  • Ariadna makes jewellery, hats and paintings using textiles, metals and gems
  • Her pieces and techniques are inspired by her native Ibiza
  • Found objects are a recurrent inspiration in her creative process

Ariadna Ferrer specialises in creatively applying a multitude of techniques to her textile work. She has sewn ever since she was a child – her mother helped her overcome her fear of scissors, and her grandmothers taught her the art of recycling. Although she studied pattern cutting and dressmaking at school, she admits that she has learned the most through trial and error in her own workshop. "I am interested in all the techniques that I can apply to textiles, such as embroidery, macramé and patchwork. I learnt to innovate on my own, as a result of my training in the fields of performing arts, design and drama," Ariadna says. She returned to her native Ibiza in 2014 and decided to focus on textiles rather than performing arts. "I rediscovered the strength of my roots and found the right space to put myself forward," she explains.

What role does Ibiza play in your work?
I cannot think of craftsmanship without its link to local culture. I believe a craft is always linked to the materials, tools and traditions of the place it is based in. Design and art are inseparable in my craft, and I convey a strong influence of local and Mediterranean folklore and traditions in my pieces.
What are your signature elements?
My signature works involve patchwork, sewing and macramé. I also apply techniques from woodworking, jewellery making, basketry, millinery and origami, but always with textiles as the main focus or the unifying thread. 'Objet trouvé' may not be a technique, but it is a constant in my work.
How is your work connected to jewellery?
On one hand, my interest in contemporary jewellery led me to experiment with textiles applied to artistic jewellery. This allowed me to create unique pieces with an experimental and exhibition-based approach. At the same time, I have developed a more commercial and customised line related to the fashion industry.
What inspires you?
Music is one of my main sources of inspiration, along with the materials I have at hand. I also draw a great deal from local folklore and art in general. I am interested in history, sociology, psychology, symbolism and increasingly, minimalism.
