Antigua Cerería del Salvador

Candle making

Seville, Spain

Recommended by Contemporánea de Artes y Oficios

A light-filled legacy

Antigua Cerería del Salvador was founded in Seville in 1845 as a family run workshop. For many generations since then, the workshop has continued to craft candles for devotional purposes, becoming a state-of-the art supplier for brotherhoods during Holy Week across Andalusia. The shop, which opened to the public in 1927, is one of the oldest and more traditional of the city, where, besides candles, a vast array of products can be found, including artistic candles, incenses, religious imagery, and silverware.

Antigua Cerería del Salvador has shown its commitment to excellence and ingenuity in the art of making candles by hand. It is an ancient but meaningful craft. The making process involves the traditional method of dipping cotton wicks in molten beeswax, building layers and giving different shapes and sizes to the candles, according to the different use they will have within the ceremony. Great attention is paid to minimising waste, collecting melted wax during the making, and collecting used candles from the brotherhoods. After Holy Week, these are melted down again, since wax is a material that remains in perfect condition.
