Anne van de Weijer

Vilt aan Zee
Felt maker

Crafted in wool

  • Anne’s lamps are woollen sculptures
  • She loves the life of a maker
  • Her pieces are textural and abstract

From the outset, Anne van de Weijer’s design focus was always felt lighting and wall decoration. Her roots are in architecture, which she studied and practised for ten years before diverging into the maker’s world of felt lamps and wall hangings. There is a serene aesthetic to her lamps reminiscent of minimalist sculpture; varying in size, the orbs once lit, emanate a warm glow that captures the lamp’s delicacy and unique texture and pattern. Anne’s wall coverings are like paintings in wool; experiments with colour gradients, layering colour upon colour to create art that resembles water colour landscapes, or an abstract expressionist canvas of a white circle with a smudged edge on an indigo background, that when stared at, looks as though the circle is moving.

What do you love most about your profession?
The whole picture. Running my own business, making my own decisions and not having to compromise on creativity. Working with a client from the beginning and making tangible objects which bring them happiness.
What is little known about your work?
Making felt objects is a labour-intensive process. Just laying the wool alone takes four hours for an average sized lamp, felting is another four, washing, drying and gluing takes two hours and the hours increase with the size of the object being made.
What does well made mean to you?
For the wall panels I find it important that it holds my interest, as it needs to challenge me in some way. For the lamps, technically, the form of the piece must be solid and be able to keep its shape over time. I lay the wool in a certain rhythm and pattern.
What is a highlight from your professional life?
My business partner at the time and I were asked to make eight lamps of more than a metre for a Television Studio in Amsterdam. Neither of us had made lamps of this size before, so we were challenged, but in the end, it turned out to be a wonderful boost for the portfolio.
