The birth of a ceramicist

  • Annalisa's works are inspired by her inner world
  • She has a passion for architecture and interior design
  • For her, ceramics are an important form of expression

Annalisa Valoroso was born in Palermo, but she isn't interested in the traditional Sicilian ceramic style, preferring instead to use clay to express herself and her feelings. "When I create, I am free, peaceful and strong," she says. Combining craftsmanship and art, Annalisa produces both everyday objects and pieces of art. All her products are unique and entirely handmade, according to the ethos of 'room number three', as her company name, Stanzanumerotre, translates. For Annalisa, this is a real place, the most important place in her life. It is the place where everything started: her son Andrea was born in room number three in the hospital of Palermo, a moment that changed her life completely.

When did you become a ceramicist?
I was studying architecture, but I left university before completing my degree. I felt I wanted to have a son, and Andrea came into our life in 2014. When I became a mother, I felt I had so much energy, and I wanted to create something with my hands.
What happened after this life changing moment?
I was travelling with my family and one day, without any reason, I had an epiphany that I would become a ceramicist. The funny thing is that I had never touched a piece of clay before that moment! Since I was a child, I had a gift for handicrafts, but nothing more.
Did you learn from a master?
I had a meeting with a professional craftswoman, but she cancelled the course because she was too busy at that time. So I ordered the clay online and started teaching myself. Since then I have studied countless books and attended many online classes.
Could your craft be considered in danger?
No, not at all. I’m lucky, this is a period in which people are starting to appreciate handicrafts and everything that comes from individual creativity. Craftsmanship is in a phase of rebirth, revival and expansion. I have faith in my work.
