Memory and landscape in textile

  • Anna's textile sculptures are shaped by Mediterranean light and landscapes
  • She creates tactile, monochrome works with reclaimed materials
  • She transforms her inner and outer worlds into a sensory artform

Anna Carmona is self-taught in textile art, with training in furniture restoration, polychromy, carpentry and carving. From childhood, she was influenced by her dressmaker mother, who taught her the value of handmade items, and her weaver grandmother, from whom she learned dedication. "Textile art offers a space of freedom to explore texture, form and emotion," she says. In 2021, Anna opened her workshop to research, work and experiment with fabrics treated with pigments, stucco and gold leaf, alongside surplus materials from the fashion industry. She creates pieces that evoke terraced hillsides, stone walls, the city and cultural life, inviting viewers to create their own inner landscapes. "Observing everything around us is an inexhaustible source of inspiration," she says. "Every detail can be a starting point for creation." Anna's work today is exhibited across Europe and the USA.

Do you specialise in specific techniques?
I specialise in the experimentation and manipulation of fibres and textile materials, and the composition of forms that dialogue between the organic and the structural. I also excel at conceptualising works that invite reflection on nature and our relationship with the environment.
How does your creative process unfold?
Most of my works begin with observation, and choosing the right materials. From there, I experiment with textures, mixtures and forms until a structure emerges that is coherent with the initial idea. I work quite intuitively, allowing the material to guide the final result.
Is the environment a key consideration in your practice?
Yes. I use wool and leather of local origin, and give priority to natural and reused materials from textile surpluses. I seek to reduce environmental impact and highlight the value of natural fibres as a resource we must care for and preserve.
How do you integrate technology into your craft?
I use electric tools such as cutters or vibratory machines to optimise felting, without renouncing manual work. Technology is a support, not a substitute. It helps me streamline certain processes whilst maintaining the artisanal soul.
