Folding

New Delhi, India

The architecture of mixed media folds

In 2008, Ankon Mitra founded his namesake multidisciplinary atelier dedicated to folding a multitude of materials as a language of contemporary craft, sculpture and spatial design in New Delhi. Ankon Mitra, an architect, landscape designer and sculptor, grew his understanding of folds from his observation of natural elements and the human body. "The fold is nature’s most efficient way to make a structure stronger, lighter and more flexible," he says. In his atelier, each idea begins as an architectural drawing or hand folded origami paper study that comes to life through his project, Oritecture, a continuous process of material testing and improvisation.

The atelier, Ankon Mitra, brings together a team of architects, designers, craftspeople and technicians. Working across fabric, leather and thin metals, artisans introduce folds to materials that do not bend naturally. Concrete is slip cast onto folded moulds, glass is slumped at high temperature to take on a creased form, and metal sheets are scored and pressed by hand. The studio works at an architectural scale, producing sculptures, installations and permanent public commissions held in collections across 18 countries.
