Andriy and Olesya met at Lviv National Art Academy
They incorporate traditional regional approaches with innovative techniques
In 2002 Andriy and Olesya founded their studio Natura Ceramica in Uzhhorod

"I love to mix raw clay imagining what it will be in the future,” says Olesya Voznicki describing why she is passionate for the ceramic craft. Olesya and her artisan husband Andriy are both well known artisans in the western Zakarpattia region of Ukraine. Their studio Natura Ceramica is a go-to place for crafts lovers in the picturesque city of Uzhhorod. For almost 20 years, this ceramics duo has been producing the finest pottery by combining traditional regional approaches with their own trademark techniques. Apart from ceramics, Andriy is also a celebrated sculptor who is not afraid to experiment with materials. His works are both welcome as exquisite interior decor pieces and as exhibits at international art exhibitions.

Why did you decide to devote your life to this craft?: Olesya: For as long as I can remember, I sculpted clay. I liked it as a material through which I could have all my artistic plans realized.
How do you express traditions and innovations in your work?: Andriy: We use traditional materials such as shingles (the authentic coating of Carpathian houses), clay and other materials, and try to reuse them in modern objects. Historically, this craft has always been present in our region. We continue this tradition using local clays.
What is curious about your craft?: Olesya: While on vacation in other countries, I try to find the clay of that region, and create a product from it. It can be all consuming this craft, when Andriy is enthralled by an interesting idea, he can not sleep all night thinking through all the details of its creation.
What has been a defining moment in your professional life?: Andriy: The moment when I realised that I create works from materials that ordinary people do not pay attention to. Their fascination with the final object is priceless.
