Quilting as abstract art

18/09/2026 | 21/09/2026Esposto in AN ATELIER ALIVE

Claudia Pettway and Cathy Mooney belong to the Gee’s Bend community in Boykin, Alabama, where a distinctive quilting tradition has been passed down through generations. Created using repurposed materials, Gee’s Bend quilts are characterised by bold geometries, improvisational compositions and an expressive approach to colour and form. During the live demonstration at Homo Faber 2026, Claudia and Cathy will share the techniques behind this longstanding tradition. Through their work, they will reveal how individual choices in fabric, composition and stitching come together within a quilting practice recognised as one of the most original forms of American abstraction.
