Bold quilts to defend a legacy

Sew Gee’s Bend Heritage Builders is a non-profit collective founded by fourth-generation quilter Claudia Pettway and her mother Tinnie Pettway. Their focus is on the heritage of the Gee’s Bend community, situated within a bend in the Alabama River, for whom quilting and storytelling remain a powerful way to preserve culture and legacy. Generations of women developed a distinctive, improvisational quilting method born entirely out of geographic isolation and economic necessity. Today, the collective has evolved the practice through community-led stewardship and collaborations with contemporary designers to develop a new chapter for the craft.

For Homo Faber 2026, the Cathy Mooney and Claudia Pettway of Sew Gee's Bend Heritage Builders present two quilts made in collaboration with the American design studio Stephen Burks Man Made and the Italian fabric house Dedar. Crafted during week-long workshops in Alabama, the pieces maintain their signature Gee's Bend aesthetic, defined by bold asymmetric geometries, dramatic fluctuations in scale and rhythmic composition. This new body of work moves away from its traditional focus on recycled fabrics to work with the fine linens, silks and velvets provided by Dedar. The collaboration demonstrates the enduring power of craft as a vehicle for identity, independence and innovation.
