Revealing the beauty in the process

Former industrial designer turned artist Vaishnavi Walvekar runs Vāhe Ensemble, an atelier that reinterprets indigenous Indian crafts into sculptural and functional art. The practice began with Kashmiri papier-mâché, taught first-hand by makers in Kashmir. Subsequent Vāhe Ensemble collections have focused on diverse Indian craft traditions, from welded brass sheets to manjarpat, an unbleached industrial cotton woven in Maharashtra, the Indian state Vaishnavi comes from. The atelier debuted its first collection at SaloneSatellite in 2022, the section of Salone del Mobile in Milan reserved for emerging designers.

Presented at Homo Faber 2026, Gibbous belongs to Vāhe Ensemble’s In Between series, a body of work that reimagines Kashmiri papier-mâché as contemporary sculpture. By hand sculpting, layer over layer, the object rises as a dense, irregular form. Its deep red surface is marked with protrusions, creases and the grain of paper pulp. By removing the mould, polish and painted ornament traditionally associated with the craft, Vāhe Ensemble turns a familiar decorative practice into a tactile and commanding presence as it reveals the material usually hidden beneath the decoration.
