The woven heritage of madur kathi
Founded in 2000 by Bashobi Tewari, GreenEarth preserves India's traditional madur kathi weaving heritage while empowering rural artisans and sustaining their livelihoods. “Since 2001, my work with master artisans has focused on creating quality products that fit today's audience,” says Bashobi. "From their homes in rural villages, GreenEarth's artisans carry forward the centuries-old tradition of using cotton thread as the warp and reed as the weft, on a simple, horizontal bamboo-frame loom.
Based in West Bengal, the team weaves tablemats, table runners, floor mats, wall hangings, cushion covers and handbags from natural reeds and grasses. GreenEarth designs are unique, with new creations introduced every two years to push the boundaries of madur kathi. “Exploring new forms and techniques is challenging but very worthwhile, as it helps widen the vocabulary of India's mat weaving tradition,” Bashobi explains.
