When Indian leather meets ancient embroidery
Founded by Devya Singh, Cavallo grew out of a commission in Delhi's historic Lutyens district to create interior pieces reflecting the character of the neighbourhood. What began as a design project evolved into an embroidered textile art atelier. After starting her career in footwear design in 1996, Devya turned to India's rich embroidery traditions and has since collaborated with other craftspeople to translate these techniques into contemporary objets d'art. Based in Delhi, the atelier creates large-scale embroidered leather works that bring together centuries-old craftsmanship and contemporary design.
Every Cavallo creation begins with an extended process of research and sketching before designs are transferred onto leather through indigo imprinting. Stretched across an adda, the traditional embroidery frame, the surface passes through the hands of master karigars, who construct intricate compositions stitch by stitch. Their work incorporates hand cut dabka, a fine coiled metal wire, whose sculptural qualities lend depth and luminosity to every surface. Exploring themes of memory, identity and place, Cavallo’s embroidered leather artworks and sculptures reveal how ancient craft traditions continue to evolve.
