Embracing experimentation, discarding convention
- Thierry is a keen experimentor of materials
- For him, traditions remain alive when they continue to evolve
- He gathers his plastic components from the streets of Mexico
When Thierry Jeannot arrived in Mexico in 1996, he discovered artisans with a strong anchoring in traditional craft knowledge. “I began observing their gestures, tools and techniques, and then started working alongside them,” he recalls. Earlier, while studying in Paris in the 1980s, Thierry had begun designing acrylic and rubber earrings and bracelets, which he sold in shops across the city. “I worked with unusual materials, oversized forms, raw metals, acrylic, burnt plastic and rubber," explains Thierry. Today, in Mexico, his practice pivots on the reinterpretation of classical lighting forms crafted from recycled PET plastic, inviting a alternative outlook on the value of waste.

INTERVIEW
In Mexico, I discovered techniques and materials that I probably would never have encountered in France. The place I live has therefore profoundly transformed the way I work.
I learned from many people and in many workshops. The artisans and small-scale manufacturers I worked with in France taught me a great deal. In Mexico, too, direct contact with artisans offered me a true schooling in craft.
With PET, I first had to overcome the very familiar image of the plastic bottle. I needed to understand its dimensions, transparency, reactions and possibilities for assembly. It took me several years to truly understand the material.
The moment when I still do not know exactly what the object will become. I enjoy that period of experimentation, when the material begins to respond, a technique emerges and the project takes a direction I had not anticipated.
