Soraya Syed is a classically trained calligrapher and artist dedicated to bringing the ancient art of Arabic calligraphy into the 21st century. Her practice is driven by an enduring fascination with the Arabic script and its extraordinary versatility, power and depth of meaning. Soraya’s work explores how the written word can inhabit space, movement and light through traditional manuscripts, immersive environments, animation, projection, performance and sculpture. In 2026, her work is the subject of a major monograph, The Living Script, which brings together leading scholars and curators to celebrate her contribution to contemporary calligraphy.
