A slower universe in the making

Sandra Resende creates hanging textile artworks through weaving and embroidery. She blends different techniques and uses natural, recycled or reused fibres, often incorporating dried flowers, branches, roots and leaves to connect her visual language with nature. Throughout her wall hangings, tapestries and woven objects, Sandra explores memory, identity, time, place and gesture. Inspired by her background in theatre, in her textile work, she allows emotional material to tell stories and create visual tension. “When I am creating, I sometimes feel that I am in a slower universe compared to the fast-paced daily world,” she reflects. Sandra's practice is mostly intuitive and tactile, and each piece she crafts is unique. Sometimes, Sandra also experiments with other techniques, such as assembling and collage.
INTERVIEW
During the pandemic lockdown, textile crafting, especially weaving and latch hook, truly came alive in my hands. Something I had carried with me since childhood suddenly felt natural and meaningful, and I knew I wanted to follow a path where I would work with my hands.
I often start with an idea, material or theme, and see where it leads. Ideas grow as I work. A text or image can spark the start. With a clear plan, I sketch, but I let materials surprise me. I use natural fibres and elements, and they often show me the next step!
My work is quite intuitive as I let the material guide me. But when I have a clear idea, or need to follow specific colours, a design or size, I make a sketch first. The sketch serves as a guide for proportions and volume.
I am working on a collaboration with another artist, creating an installation with textile and paper, as well as developing a series dedicated to exploring colour as metaphor. In this work, yellow is in Metamorphosis, green in Kokemusu, and black in Kemet. In 2026, I am also part of Fiat Lux in Venice with De Mains de Maîtres and Homo Faber.
