Before exploring the art of European lacquer, Nathalie Rolland-Huckel's journey with craft began with porcelain decorating. During a visit to the Musée Guimet in Paris, she discovered lacquered Japanese inro cases, which led her to study the craft with master Isabelle Emmerique. Since then, Nathalie has specialised in the creation of lacquered vases, jewellery, and panels for collectors and watch dials for Hermès. "Lacquer transforms and elevates objects through a complex ornamental style and richness, drawing inspiration from a repertoire of motifs that spans centuries and cultures," she says. Since 2021, Nathalie has been collaborating with her daughter Solène Rolland, creating works in which the depth of lacquer engages in a dialogue with the precision of engraving. Her work was awarded the Open Call prize at Homo Faber 2024 in Venice.
INTERVIEW
The art of lacquer spread in the Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries. This coincided with the popularity of chinoiseries. In France, there was a desire to reinterpret the Asian art for a French audience, which is something I loved.
I come from the countryside. I am interested in flowers and plants, and I find them to be rich structures full of inspiration. When I walk in my garden I observe everything very closely. I am attracted to the abundance of colours.
I love the choice of colours. I feel as though they speak to me. Last year, I used many different shades of reds and oranges. My practice still requires a lot of studying and experimentation with new colour schemes to avoid repetitiveness. I am always trying to innovate.
Everything lies in the details. Details make the object unique and precious. Japanese lacquer art is rich in details, each with its own meaning. I feel largely connected to Asian traditions of craftsmanship.
