Marie Vallet

Weaver

Leiden, Netherlands

A colour-led craft of natural fibres

  • Marie enjoys playing with different shades in her woven creations
  • Her designs are based on her colour combinations
  • She exclusively works with responsibly sourced, high quality fibres

Marie Vallet weaves unique pieces that reflect her endless curiosity for playfully combining colours and exploring intricate patterns. Always eager to learn new crafts, she discovered her passion for weaving while living in England. "I took a weaving course and realised I could turn the craft into a career," Marie says. Today, she is based near Leiden, a Dutch city that stood at the heart of the textile industry during the Golden Age. Marie works with natural fibres and hand dyed yarns to create everything from scarves to home textiles. She also teaches weaving, encouraging experimentation and individuality while sharing her love for a craft that continually reveals new possibilities.

Marie Vallet is a rising star: she began her career in 2019 and she started teaching in 2023.

INTERVIEW

I have a wall with colours, from which I pick some shades and start my pattern. I think about how to assemble a piece and go from colours to design. I always start with an idea of what I am going to make, but sometimes the result ends up being completely different.

I really enjoy learning from my students. They face problems I have never encountered or create colour combinations I would never use, which helps me grow as a weaver. I like to draw inspiration from other people’s work and the way they use colour.

I do not enjoy doing the same thing more than once. I am always drawn to a challenge or the chance to learn something new. It does not have to be life-changing. Sometimes, it is simply about stepping outside my comfort zone with colour or trying a weave structure I have not explored. I do not see mistakes as failures, but as opportunities to learn and grow, both as a person and as a weaver.

I love seeing people wear and use my pieces. My sister is my biggest fan: she actually uses my pieces instead of putting them away in a drawer as something too special. I use high quality materials because my pieces are meant to be used.
