Forests, birds and leaves from Brazil
- Laura developed her own technique of dried leaf embroidery
- She finds inspiration in birdwatching, captivated by the colours and behaviours of native birds
- Her work portrays endangered birds to honour biodiversity and preserve local territory
Through her embroidery on leaves and fruit peels, Laura Dalla Vecchia transforms delicate materials into a powerful practice that celebrates Brazilian biodiversity. Originally from the coast of Paraná, she grew up surrounded by the slow rhythm of her mother's bio-jewellery making atelier. "Every material held a story and every gesture demanded care," says Laura. Her father, a Caiçara fisherman, taught her patience and observation, and instilled in her a profound connection to nature. "These early experiences taught me to view craft as a way to honour the world around me," she says. Today, Laura depicts native Brazilian birds, many threatened with extinction, with the intention of honouring and preserving them. Her unconventional leaf embroidery practice weaves together territory, life and cultural heritage.

INTERVIEW
I started experimenting freely on fabric. While spending time at my grandparents’ farm in Pará, I tried embroidery on dried leaves and fruit peels, which were extremely delicate. Little by little, I learned to respect the material and work with its fragility until I developed my own technique.
My greatest inspiration is Brazilian biodiversity, especially the Atlantic Forest where I grew up. The dried leaves mirror the world's fragility and strength. My vision is shaped by landscapes, seas and birds.
My work is deeply connected to Brazilian territory. I depict endangered native birds on leaves from native trees such as guanandi and ipê-da-serra. This strengthens the bond between material, species and place.
Environmental responsibility guides my scale and intention. I work slowly, and mostly on commission. I embroider on leaves that have completed their natural cycles. I collect them carefully without harming the plant, respecting nature’s rhythm.
