Luminous layers of porcelain
- John's porcelain tile panels feature carefully placed, gradating hues
- He works with traditional techniques and digital tools, such as laser cutting
- He developed his own emulsion technique on clay
John Bauer creates porcelain tiles, panels and bowls imbued with his unique creative vision, insight and expressive spirit. He integrates technology with techniques from other mediums, such as Italian glass millefiori, coin minting and bronze casting, with traditional ceramic processes such as atmospheric firing and mosaic. John has also invented his own 'dioroidal printing' technique, an emulsion process that captures ambient images directly into the clay body. He has great love for permanent public art. "I desire to do more of this, to send my murals around the world, like love letters from Cape Town," John says. "I hope people might see in them the textural richness of my city and be inspired to visit it."

INTERVIEW
Absolutely. Craft, beyond its material form, is an idea. Ideas cannot be confined to rigid frameworks. Good ideas are unruly and erupt in all directions. I integrate technology through diverse applications, using modern tools like laser cutting to develop my own techniques.
Through my craft and the residencies I offer, bringing together participants from around the globe. My public artworks composed of rows upon rows of vibrant tiles that tell wordless stories and hold healing properties.
I am currently working on illusion tiles that flash with a different image as the lighting angle changes. These speak to the contemporary moving image on the screen that has caused our brains to hunt out movement for hours a day on screens. I tap into this neurological habit, engaging the audience where their attention rests by appealing to their contemporary visual sensibility.
I worry that for economic reasons, market pressure forces masters to prioritise production over developing excellence. I also worry that those who teach are so deeply committed to the educational aspect of their craft that they do not take the time to expand their own practice.
