Born in Spain, Helena Medrano established her textile printing workshop, Fuga in Sicily, in 2020, after living in Sicily for a decade. Her craft explores art, botany and landscape through botanical printing, an ancient technique she recovered and reinvented. Helena's path combines political science studies in Barcelona, an MA in fine art in Brighton, Art Factory T45 and an apprenticeship in Angela Matera's engraving workshop in Siracusa. Her work captures the physical imprint of Mediterranean plants on textiles and paper. Helena also leads immersive experiences on environmental responsibility, fostering a connection with the territory through tactile workshops. "My craft chose me. Working with nature is not an act of conquest, but one of deep listening," she says.

I learned the craft on my own. My specific botanical printing technique stems from years of self-taught experimentation and direct interaction with plants.
The craft struck me while pulling my very first botanical prints. After years of painting, those initial impressions did not feel like experiments, they marked a turning point. They bridged my life in Sicily with my studio in Vivaio Cuba, and I knew right then that this would become my practice.
After spending a decade raising my three children, I finally found the space and energy to pursue my practice. I allowed myself what I felt was a small daily escape from the house to dedicate myself to the workshop. It was an act of reconquest.
I create tactile maps of Mediterranean nature. Through botanical printing, I transfer the organic imprint of a plant onto fabric, transforming it into wearable art or decorative textiles. This craft allows people to carry a physical piece of the landscape into their everyday lives.
