The art of statement millinery
- Awon creates bespoke pieces for royalty, rock stars, as well as collections for fashion designers
- She dedicated herself to millinery after a career in magazine writing and styling
- Her work combines heritage millinery craftsmanship with a modern expressive vision
Awon’s approach to British millinery is shaped by her multicultural background, expressed through the vibrant hats and headpieces she creates in her independent workshop. She graduated in millinery from Kensington and Chelsea College and has continuously refined her techniques. “I received a distinction for my degree, training afterwards in different master milliners' workshops to gain practical experience with materials and develop specific skills,” she says. A member of the British Hat Guild and Head Millinery Designer at Lock & Co. Hatters, one of Britain's oldest hat makers, Awon brings fresh perspectives to this traditional craft with elegance and originality. As a master in the Homo Faber Fellowship programme, she shared her knowledge with her fellow while encouraging the creative mindset needed to attain surprising results.

INTERVIEW
I have extensive experience in blocking, composition, crinoline and collection design. I am always seeking to broaden my array of techniques to be able to implement them in new designs. For instance, I am currently learning straw braiding, which is an endangered technique in the UK.
I enjoy exploring technical boundaries, pushing my creativity and seeing celebrities such as Lady Gaga and royalty such as Catherine, Princess of Wales wear my hats. I also greatly enjoy my ongoing collaboration with haute couture designer Robert Wun on his seasonal collections.
While I am London-based and my practice is rooted in British millinery heritage, my own perspective is shaped by being born and raised in Hong Kong with English-Indian heritage. I bring a distinctly multicultural point of view to the craft.
My first hat was a small headpiece I made for my step-brother’s wedding in the mid-2000s. It was my first English wedding, so I thought it was the perfect excuse for a hat. This was my first foray into millinery.
