The quiet pulse behind a rigid material

  • Aurélien creates animal sculptures using chicken wire
  • He repurposes materials to reveal their aesthetic potential
  • He works in the house where he grew up, a place that continues to shape his work

Materials and craftsmanship were part of Aurélien Raynaud's everyday life growing up. After training in drawing and architecture, he developed his sculptural practice through years of experimentation. Today, as a sculptor, draughtsman and painter, Aurélien works in metal, wood, stone and other materials. "Whatever the material, animals remain at the heart of my practice, as each piece seeks to capture their individual presence and character," he says. Aurélien's work invites viewers to see the living world differently, reconnect with it and become more aware of its fragility. “I seek to give presence to beings we too often look at without truly seeing. Every species possesses an elegance, a disquieting truth and a way of inhabiting the world that deeply fascinates me,” he explains.

Aurélien Raynaud is an expert artisan: he began his career in 1988.

INTERVIEW

There is an old French saying that roughly translates to 'go over your work a hundred times until it is right,' which perfectly sums up my journey. My work has taught me discipline, perseverance and humility. A work of art is shaped as much by mistakes as it is by success.

Reaching international clients was an important milestone in my practice. It gave me the opportunity to meet people who are deeply committed to protecting the living world, such as Jane Goodall and Paul Watson. These encounters encouraged me to continue pursuing metal sculpting.

The greatest challenge is preserving the intelligence of the hand. In a world where digital tools are becoming increasingly dominant, I believe it is essential to preserve the mastery of gesture, material and the time required for making.

I find it challenging when the initial idea meets the reality of the material. That moment brings doubt, but it is also when the work truly begins to come to life.
