The many faces of crafted paper
- Annemarieke is a multidisciplinary artist working with paper
- She creates sets for TV and film as well as paper sculptures for exhibitions
- Her practice focuses on inclusivity, intersectional feminism and queer art
A chance school exchange in England set Annemarieke Kloosterhof on a path to becoming an artist at the age of 17. She was accepted to Central Saint Martins for a foundation year, even though she applied primarily to understand the application process. Today, Annemarieke's multidisciplinary paper art draws on aspects of theatre design, graphic design and 3D product design courses she followed during her studies. Her paper furniture pieces feature in a Leighton House Museum exhibition, while her set designs form backdrops for blockbuster TV shows, such as Bridgerton, and her most talked about piece, a paper craft vulva, hit viral status. “I love working with paper, whether through cutting, layering, embossing, 3D sculpture or paper mâché. There are so many different ways of using this one really simple material,” she says.

INTERVIEW
I am a paper artist, designer, art director and illustrator. I have recently changed my Instagram profile to say that I am a multidisciplinary artist specialising in paper craft, because I work across multiple mediums.
In my early works, I used tiny scissors or knives. Later, I started using plotters and paper cutting machines in tandem with my own skills. The pieces for my recent exhibitions have been so detailed that machines could not handle them, so I had to cut everything out myself. Technology cannot always help.
I like the variety that my work offers me. One week I will be doing a personal commission, hyper-focusing on a really intricate piece. The next week, I will be on set with a team of 50 people building a large-scale piece. I would get bored quickly if I were constantly doing the same thing.
People are fascinating. I love to learn about them through sociology, psychology, culture and nostalgia. When I have nothing to do, I attend new workshops. This year, I learned about stained glass window making. I have previously taken classes in improv comedy, burlesque and football. As an artist and individual, I find constant learning and growth essential.
