Seizing subtleties in pure porcelain
- Andrew's pieces use white porcelain to emphasise light, shadow and form
- He values throwing as it captures the wheel's movements and the maker’s hand
- He took his first pottery class at age five
Andrew Wicks interprets nature's perfect imperfections in porcelain. His passion began in childhood, when he made a small clay pig in a pottery class. "Ceramics is a kind of magic that transforms soft clay into functional objects and works of art," Andrew says. Encouraged by an inspiring art teacher, he went on to study art and design, earning a degree in 3D design from the University of Brighton and an MA in ceramics and glass from the Royal College of Art in London. “From then on, I focused on clay. I tried other crafts, but I was always drawn back to ceramics,” he says. Andrew has always been fascinated by the intricate details of natural forms such as corals, fish and leaves, and his work continues to draw on those influences.
INTERVIEW
I am drawn to porcelain’s purity and the way it reveals natural qualities. Made from very fine particles, it is a delicate and demanding material that requires patience and precision. However, its inherent beauty makes the challenge worthwhile.
Throwing allows me to shape a wide range of forms in the moment. It requires focus to achieve the ideas I have in mind. The finished pieces breathe life as they retain the marks of the maker’s hand and the movement of the spinning wheel.
Nature often appears ordered and precise, but closer inspection reveals subtle irregularities. The balance between structure and imperfection is a constant source of inspiration, and that perfect imperfection is my main influence.
I use traditional tools and techniques, working primarily with my hands, a wheel, a kiln and simple hand tools. My approach is contemporary because I create forms and compositions that reflect my own vision and the present day, while aiming for a sense of timelessness.
