Reflections of past and future
Abed Daaboul’s practice has long been shaped by a deep engagement with traditional craft and a drive towards material innovation. He developed a hands-on mastery of mother-of-pearl inlay while working in a carpentry in Lebanon. Abed’s path intersected with Nada Debs and together they began to experiment with extending inlay techniques beyond their conventional frameworks. Today, he works from Homs, where his work unites inherited knowledge with new material possibilities, contributing to the ongoing transformation of a centuries-old tradition.
The piece presented at Homo Faber 2026 is an item of resin art, the result of a collaboration between Abed Daaboul, Nada Debs and MARIAGROUP. It builds on Nada Debs’ previous experiments in which plexiglass served as a base for mother-of-pearl inlay. This development has allowed craftspeople to engage with a material that is lighter, more versatile and more aligned with contemporary production and aesthetics than traditional wood. It extends the life of the craft by giving artisans new possibilities to explore and becomes a bridge between tradition and the present.
