Aberkan; Marok; Panyin; Sawda

These sculptures by Donald Baugh were each made in two parts, hollowed and hand shaped. The surfaces were hand carved with symbols, then stained or darkened, and finished with oil. Celebrating the artistic traditions of diverse African cultures, the pieces draw inspiration from architecture, body markings, landscapes and craftsmanship. Aberkan is inspired by the Tuareg desert; Marok reinterprets the flowing patterns of Maasai beadwork; Panyin explores the inseparability of the human form and the natural environment; and Sawda draws on Egyptian hieroglyphs and early Nile cultures. Together, the works bring cultural memory into a contemporary sculptural language.
