Thepa Mapa; Waterhole Season for Every Animal

These vases by the collective Hermannsburg Potters were coil built from terracotta, with lids shaped into figurative forms. The surfaces were decorated with underglazes portraying animals and scenes from the natural landscape. Thepa Mapa was created by Josie Fly. The work draws on the artist’s childhood memories of the many birds she observed while camping with her family. Waterhole Season for Every Animal was made by Gwen Mbitjana Inkamala. The piece depicts animals gathering at desert waterholes, including galahs that arrive in spring and summer after the heavy rains.
