This sculpture by Xu was created through a hybrid process combining fabric and clay slip, in which the textile acts as a structural framework for the ceramic. The resulting surface is at once soft and rigid. Revisiting jiaocao, a traditional Chinese porcelain-packing method once used in global trade, the piece preserves the memory and cultural significance of a practice now displaced by plastic and modern materials.
