Vase Sacre I; Vase Sacré Symbiose

These sculptures by Mbaye Babacar Diouf were handcrafted from bronze, using the lost-wax casting technique. After firing, the surface was transformed through the application of patina using heat, acids and oxidation. Vase Sacré Symbiose also features wooden elements, which were united after casting the bronze. Exploring the universal motif of the vessel as a container of sacred energy, the pieces leverage the visual potency of signs and scriptures. The artist drew inspiration from his Sufi practice, his influential stay in China, and a vocabulary of forms derived from Sahelian culture.
