Black ship

Exhibited in A ROOTED ASCENT

Lacquer, Bamboo, Rattan, Bags and luggages

This basket by Kyokusho Tanaka was created using the sensuji-gumi technique, with bamboo strips placed at precise intervals. Variations in width and spacing determine the final composition, developed from full-scale drawings and study models. Reflecting an architectural approach to bamboo, the piece is reminiscent of the cables of the Golden Gate Bridge and the historical arrival in Japan of Commodore Perry’s black ships.
