This appliqué quilt depicts Camp H at Louisiana State Penitentiary, and is drawn from Gary Tyler’s memories of working on the prison paint crew. Two guard towers stand against a storm-laden grey sky. The surface is densely stitched, heightening the turbulence of the atmosphere. A black and white striped border frames the composition, referencing historic penal uniforms and reinforcing the stark, foreboding presence.
