Sleeping, Girls

This framed work is a piece from the Sleeping series. It uses thread, wool and silk fabrics to create a relief representation of young girls asleep. Their faces are shaded by playing with subtly different lengths of chain stitch, made with Lunéville crochet, an embroidery hook used in the production of Parisian haute couture. The hats they wear are made from flower petals gilded with coloured silver leaf. These petals, with their raised veins, create delicate shadows.
