Walking into the Oficina da Formiga is like stepping back in time to a 19th century ceramic atelier. Jorge Saraiva and his wife Milú create visits which combine theory with practical. They introduce the various types of ceramics; porous (terracotta and earthenware) versus non-porous (stoneware and porcelain), their distinct characteristics and manufacturing processes. The couple then show different ways of shaping pieces as well as traditional finishing and firing techniques. Special attention is paid to the hand-painted decorations with traditional Portuguese themes. In the atelier’s showroom the vintage collections for meal times can be appreciated and acquired.
