Shaping gemstone into sculpted jewel

Germany-based artist Elsa Marceau combines traditional gemstone carving techniques with a personal approach to create precious pieces that blur the boundary between sculpture and wearable art. Working with the natural characteristics of each stone, she allows its structure, inclusions and optical properties to guide the final design. During the live demonstration at Homo Faber 2026, Elsa will carve gemstones by hand using traditional tools and techniques. Visitors will see up close how careful abrasion gradually brings the form into view, offering insight into the sensitivity required to respond to the materials' unique qualities.
