Commune explores natural perfumery through the practice of slow scent, a sensory approach developed by natural perfumer Mandy Aftel. Working with pure essential oils and absolutes, from rose otto and jasmine sambac to vetiver, tobacco and frankincense, the makers focus on understanding the individual character and evolution of each natural ingredient. During the live demonstration at Homo Faber 2026, visitors will discover these ingredients one at a time on paper blotters, learning to recognise their different notes, origins and extraction methods. Using the traditional perfumer’s wheel, Commune will reveal how individual aromas are organised and gradually combined into balanced accords, before demonstrating how raw natural ingredients are transformed into the finished blends used in its products.
