Illustrating ceramics through sgraffito

Italian artist Clara Holt uses sgraffito to create detailed and imaginative illustrations on clay. The decorative technique involves applying layers of coloured slip and carefully etching them away to reveal the surface beneath. During the live demonstration at Homo Faber 2026, Clara will decorate leather-hard vessels and plates prepared in advance. Visitors will see up close how she creates her designs by removing the coloured surface layer through precise gestures.
