The Ca’ Pisani Rubelli palace was formerly the home of the founder of the Rubelli family business which started in 1889 with the acquisition of a Venetian weaving mill. Today it is home to the Rubelli Foundation which houses and promotes the Rubelli Historical Archive, an extraordinary collection of textiles and works on paper, built up over more than 100 years of activity in addition to a collection of ancient textiles. Passing through the display, visitors discover the art and skill in Venetian and international handcrafted fabrics. In Venice, the ancient tradition of silk textiles dates back to the Middle Ages, and the exhibit showcases works from the Renaissance pile-on-pile red velvets to the ciselé velvets. This latter typical Venetian velvet was produced by Rubelli right from the start, on jacquard handlooms that are still active at the manufacturer in Cucciago today. Rubelli’s world is a place where history, craftsmanship and age-old know-how intertwine and inspire today’s designers and artisans.
