Solène Eloy

Decorative painter

Frescos for the modern world

  • Solène is one of the few practising fresco artists in France
  • She created L’Atelier du Mur in 2010, after ten years of personal practice
  • She makes contemporary fresco panels using traditional techniques

Solène Eloy discovered fresco painting at the age of 18 when she was living in Rome with her family. She became fascinated by the whole process, from raw materials to construction, and the possibility of creating beautiful and subtle works. After leaving school she attended the Olivier de Serres art school in Paris to learn decorative painting. Following her own path was always her driving force and in 2010 she turned her passion into a reality when she created her own workshop, L’Atelier du Mur. Here, she creates large-scale works that draw on long-held carving and painting techniques while reflecting modernity.

Do you master any specific techniques?
I use traditional techniques such as fresco painting, chipboard templates on glass or traditional wall decoration and wallpaper techniques. The constant search for new renderings, new materials and new motifs allows me to multiply my field of possibilities and constantly renew myself.
What tools do you use?
The fresco maker's masonry tools, which make it possible to create magnificent white leaves by carving. I also really like the tools of gilding; the gilding cushion forms a small screen that protects the gold leaf. When you are perched on a scaffold creating a large-scale work, it feels very poetic.
What specific skills do you master?
I like the effect when I mix raw materials with precious ones. I am able to give my works a luxurious feel without ostentation, so that the décor or furniture remains elegant. For example, I use gold leaf in my work; it serves a graphic purpose and provides texture.
What's your approach to tradition and innovation?
Mixing tradition and innovation is in the DNA of my work. I collaborate with other craftspeople, such as glassmakers and paint manufacturers. I combine traditional techniques with my own contemporary and personal interpretation to develop tailor made solutions.
