Silver Sentimenti

Ceramicist

Embroidered ceramics

  • Silver has always wanted to create handmade objects
  • He worked for many Haute Couture houses in Paris
  • The need to ennoble remains a prerequisite for his creation

Originally from Faenza, a city with a long ceramic tradition, Silver grew up in a sewing workshop knowing that one day he would end up creating objects with his hands. Passionate about the decorative arts and the history of fashion, he became interested in the techniques linked to these disciplines, which he learned to master patiently during his 20-year-career in the Paris fashion industry. His multidisciplinary approach borrows from his savoir faire, which he applies to his embroidered earth creations initiating a sensitive dialogue between clay, leather, textiles and metal. With complex interlacing of textures and reliefs on sandstone surfaces, he explores the archetypes of the container infusing them with a modern flair. Now running his own workshop, Silver wants to put all his experience at the service of his own creativity, without any compromise.

Would you say your craft is endangered?
In my opinion, any form of craftsmanship is in danger in the face of the trivialization of industrial production. What the Michelangelo Foundation does is essential for our survival: to train the public about the complexity of our know-how. Culture is the only form of sustainable development for me!
What fascinates you most about your work?
What fascinates me with clay, this living material, is that it takes time to transform, which radically contrasts with the frantic pace of fashion. My hands have time to express themselves at a slower rhythm and merge with my textile expertise that is at the centre of my artistic approach.
Where do you draw your inspiration from?
I draw on the rich history of fashion and costume making, but also that of the decorative arts, primitive arts and various crafts of the world that I am passionate about. For my transition from textile to clay, I keep the need to ennoble, which remains for me a prerequisite for any creation.
What do you consider as something "well done"?
A mastery and a respect for materials and techniques. It’s important not to skip the steps and to be very persistent and never stop training and learning. People don't normally know how much patience and perseverance is involved in our work.
