Putting a bit of craft into homes
Founded in 1912, Shikada Sangyo specialises in the manufacture of “sudare” screens. A ubiquitous feature of Japanese spaces, sudare are customarily used as window treatments or decorative room partitions and are made by weaving together strips of bamboo. At the centre of Shikada Sangyo’s work is the centuries old concept of “shitsurai” hospitality, which entails the careful arrangement of a room to harmonise with nature and the changing seasons.
In addition to traditional and more contemporary pull-cord sudare, Shikada Sangyo also works with external designers to create unique furnishings tailored to suit modern interiors. Notably, sudare by Shikada Sangyo are a key element of several restaurants designed by renowned architect Kengo Kuma, located in Tokyo and the United States. In order to ensure that the craft will be passed down to future generations, Shikada Sangyo continues to produce sudare by hand using traditional techniques and is actively involved in the conservation of local bamboo forests.
