Dieuwke Raats

Jewellery maker

Speaking of nature through gems and gold

  • Nature is Dieuwke’s main source of inspiration
  • The Premio Incinque Jewels contest in 2022 was a highlight of her professional journey
  • She teaches courses online and at her workshop

Dutch jewellery maker and designer Dieuwke Raats always knew she wanted to work with her hands. She learned the art of goldsmithing at the Vocational School of Schoonhoven, where she graduated in 1996. After apprenticing with local goldsmiths, she studied to become an art teacher at ArtEZ University in Zwolle and refined her craft through workshops, including one in Italy which focused on jewellery wax modelling. Working primarily with precious stones and metals, Dieuwke’s designs have an elegant simplicity. “My work is sensitive and detailed. It is not big and expressive but quiet and modest,” she says. In 2022, Dieuwke was nominated for the Premio Incinque Jewels contest in Rome. Today, she also inspires others to discover the craft through workshops and online courses.

Where do you draw your inspiration from?
While my bespoke jewellery reflects personal stories, my main source of inspiration has always been nature. Walking my dog gives me time to really observe details, textures and colours outdoors. I like to show the beauty of imperfection. Nature’s fragility is central to my creative process.
What is the most memorable piece you made?
That was a ring called Speranza e Fede (Hope and Faith). I created it for the Premio Incinque Jewels contest in Rome in 2022. The theme was the 19th-century Grand Tour trips, and the piece had to reflect our own journey. Attending the exhibition and seeing my work showcased was truly a career highlight.
What has been the best compliment someone has given you?
A touching compliment came from a customer who, facing a serious illness, wore my jewellery to her diagnosis appointment. She shared that it made her feel strong and comforted. Knowing my work could offer such support was deeply moving and meaningful to me.
What do you love most about your craft?
What I love most about my craft is the constant challenge to grow and learn. I enjoy teaching others and seeing their happiness while exploring new techniques myself. I hope to expand my collection, showcase it internationally, and pass on my skills to younger generations.
