Precious boxes for precious objects

  • Furio handcrafts beautiful wooden boxes for collectors
  • He uses only natural materials to avoid any danger to the items
  • Commissions for his boxes come from all over the world

With an innate talent for woodworking, Furio Troiano decided to focus entirely on the creation of bespoke wooden boxes, leaving his job as a former manager of a do-it-yourself store. Thanks to his commitment, precision and passion, he gained an international recognition among all kinds of collectors. Today, he knows what he needs to do with his handcrafted boxes to meet the requirements of all kinds of collectors. "British collectors like them in mahogany, with green, round-shaped upholstery, North Americans want them red or blue, and French collectors require that the velvet inside be rigorously blue," he says. However, box making is not just about aesthetics: the materials and glues used to craft the box are key to ensure safety and perfect preservation of the precious collected items.

Why are your boxes sought after internationally?
I am one of the few artisans who create entirely handmade boxes for collectors. I exclusively use natural materials and glues, and avoid all potentially dangerous chemical substances. Safety and preservation are by far the main concerns of any collector.
What do collectors expect from your boxes?
In general, collectors expect the boxes to have the same quality standards as their precious collectibles, so every detail of the box must be meticulously handcrafted. It is important to know the specific requirements of different collectors, according to where they come from or the kind of items they collect.
Do commissions vary by country?
Yes, definitely. British coin collectors like mahogany boxes with green upholstery, and each item must have a round-shaped space, instead of the square shapes that Italians favour. French collectors like blue velvet, while North Americans like red or blue. It is a diverse world.
What does the future hold for you?
I want to meet the specific requirements of all kinds of collectors. I started with making boxes for coins, but now I am commissioned to create boxes for all sorts of objects. I am also exploring techniques to integrate technologies within my boxes, including lights and rotating mechanisms for automatic watches.
